Kotri Barrage still in 'high flood'
KARACHI (September 10, 2010): River Indus at Kotri Barrage is still flowing in high flood and it would remain in the same position at this station during next 24 hours, irrigation officials said on Tuesday. They said the River Indus at Kotri is in high flood where the upstream is recorded at 586, 465 cusecs while the downstream at 561, 320 cusecs.



Government plans distributing free seed, fertilisers to farmers: Zardari
KARACHI (September 10, 2010): President Asif Ali Zardari said Thursday that greatest damage was caused to agriculture sector in the floods and seed and fertilisers will be distributed free-of-cost among the flood-hit small farmers all over the country. He was talking to members of FPCCI core committee led by its president Sultan Chawla at Bilawal House.



Malaysian Council donates vanaspati, edible oil
KARACHI (September 10, 2010): Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), an Association of Palm Oil Refiners in Malaysia, has donated vanaspati and edible oil worth 450,000 dollars to be distributed amongst the flood-affected people in various camps of Pakistan.



Gold prices stay firm on local market
KARACHI (September 10, 2010): Gold prices on Thursday remained unchanged at Rs 39, 850 per tola just Rs 100 low from last historic high on the local market, traders said. "Market closed as bullion rates unchanged although the international price of gold has declined to $1255 an ounce from $1260," said a trader at Karachi bullion market.



Three million tonnes of rice available for export
ISLAMABAD (September 09, 2010): Pakistan will have up to 3 million tonnes of rice available for export this year despite the worst floods in its modern history that damaged nearly 28 percent of the crop, traders said on Wednesday. Floods have affected more than 708,000 hectares (1.7 million acres) of rice out of the total 2.64 million hectares, according to government estimates. Production losses are feared at around two million tonnes.



Managing Committee members: election in Reap on September 22
LAHORE (September 09, 2010): Polling for election of 10 new Managing Committee members of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (Reap) for a two-year term will be held on September 22. Five new members each from North and South Zone of the Association will be elected by the members of the Association on that day in polling, which will simultaneously be held at Reap Head Office Lahore and Reap House Karachi.



Sindh growers unlikely to cultivate Rabi crops
KARACHI (September 09, 2010): Sindh is unlikely to cultivate the crops of upcoming Rabi season as the floodwaters have badly affected the agricultural lands in almost all districts of the province, it is learnt. However, the agricultural fields affected by the floodwaters would require at least six months to come to a normal position, while the growers would face multiple problems after receding of the feet-deep water, sources told Business Recorder on Wednesday.



'Pakistan will have to import vegetables, pulses'
KARACHI (September 09, 2010): Floods have caused great losses to the agriculture sector and experts are of the view that Pakistan will have to import vegetables, pulses, spices from India, Iran and other neighbouring counties due to shortage of these commodities in the near future.



Gold prices hit record high
KARACHI (September 09, 2010): Gold prices on Wednesday closed at Rs 39,850 per tola just Rs 100 below historic high after global market touched fresh peak of $1260 an ounce, traders said. Gold was available for Rs 39,650 per tola two days ago on the local market, which rose to Rs 39,850 with Rs 200 increase. Similarly, price of gold per 10-gram went up close to historic high, as it was tagged at Rs 34,157 up from Rs 33,900, traders added.



'Pakistan can capture international dairy market by exploiting potential'
FAISALABAD (September 09, 2010): Pakistan as fifth largest milk producing country can capture international dairy and meat market by exploiting its potential in accordance with modern technology and value addition mechanism being practised in modern world. This was stated by Managing Director, Nestle Pakistan, Ian James Donald. He was addressing Medal distribution ceremony jointly organised by National Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFSAT) UAF and Nestle Pakistan here on Wednesday.
