A great tax loophole for the rich
LETTER (March 10, 2010): Corporations that take business risk, create employment, enhance economic productivity and earn foreign exchange for the country are taxed at 35% on their income. Salaried class is taxed based on its income level. In higher income brackets the tax rate on salaries can be as high as 20%.

A farewell to Shaukat Tarin
LETTER (March 10, 2010): This refers to a very impressive article on the above topic by Anjum Ibrahim. We normally shower praise on those in office. She has set a good precedent by giving recognition to some one who has left office and that too in a prominent space like editorial page.

International day of women
LETTER (March 09, 2010): International Women's Day was celebrated throughout the world on March 8. It was a day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. Once it was the contemplation of narrow minded societies that women can only work as a house wives and could not make their names in any shape; but now the whole trend has changed.

Nadra's clarification
LETTER (March 08, 2010): This is with reference to a letter published in Business Recorder on 3 March 2010, "National Identity Cards" in which Abdul Aziz mentioned that people are facing difficulties in CNIC renewal, terming the CNIC being issued as provisional CNICs.

The ball is in India's court
LETTER (March 07, 2010): The recent Indian offer to resume talks after a prolonged state of deep freeze has been welcomed by the Pakistan government and the international community at large. But there has been a general feeling of disappointment as the talks yielded no tangible results. India's viewpoint has remained very strict right from the start and has remained unwavering in its stance which focuses solely on terrorism.

PTCL-DSL package
LETTER (March 07, 2010): In September 2009, I got DSL connection on my landline No 36315169 under student package with one month free offer. On expiry of free offer time-limit bill received according to student package but from the very next month, DSL charged at normal rate without any intimation to me.

Ordeal of passport seekers
LETTER (March 06, 2010): What callous people we are! We do not let any opportunity slip to victimise our fellow citizens when they are fallen prey to any misfortune or a difficulty.

Depression among adolescents
LETTER (March 05, 2010): It is absolutely normal to feel blue occasionally or to feel down for a while if something happens bad to us. Out of the usual run of things, bad moods or acting out is likely to be happened, but depression is somewhat exceptional. It is important to understand the difference between feeling sad or blue and being what is called "clinically depressed".

Dr Aafia's ordeal
LETTER (March 04, 2010): This is in response to the article 'Caravans and howling of stray animals' by Farhat Taj in which she blames the media to be involved in a pro-Taliban, high profile campaign for the release of Pakistan's scientist Dr Aafia Siddiqui, for whom she believes, the entire nation is constantly promoting a one-sided view. Dr Aafia and her entire family, like many others, has been the victim of war on terror.

National identity cards
LETTER (March 03, 2010): The CNIC, issues by the Nadra on provisional basis, are now expired and the public is found thronged around the office for renewal. Many aged/helpless persons, widows etc are found standing in such long queues. In spite of such rush, limited cards are accepted and the rest of applicants are advised to come on the next day. Evidently, such crowd is on increase day by day.
